An avocado that took over like a wildfire was created by accident by a postman and budding horticulturist Rudolph Hass who bought Fuerte avocado seedlings in 1920’s. The tree however wasn’t fruitful for a while until it produced a bumpy, thick-skinned, rough-textured fruit contrary to what he wanted. 

Even though Hass wanted to chop the tree off, his children convinced him to do the opposite. In 1935 Hass patented the Hass avocado and made a deal with Harold Brokaw to grow and promote the fruit. 

Good choice because now Hass Avocados in Kenya have the most popular commercially grown avocado tree which is known to be self-pollinating and has green leaves year-round. The trees produce fruit in five years in total.
